What is PSYPACT and why does it matter?

It’s a pretty exciting day when, as therapists, we finish graduate school and receive our degree, but it’s even more exciting when we’re finally licensed! Our license is one way we protect our clients and the public by clearly demonstrating our level of education, training, and experience while also upholding rules and regulations that help keep us in tune and accountable for best practices.

The PSYPACT Commission is kind of similar. PSYPACT stands for Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact and is essentially legislation put into place in order to protect the public amidst the growing advancements and accessibility of teletherapy. Now, more than ever, clinicians and clients are able to connect and overcome great distances. The tricky part is that every state has slightly different rules and regulations…which can make it hard for clinicians to practice effectively and safely.

PSYPACT helps overcome these difficulties by increasing public access to services, encouraging cooperation and communication of information among states in the area of psychology licensure and regulation; promoting compliance among practitioners; and enhancing our ability to protect the public’s health and - most importantly - your wellbeing.

So simply put, PSYPACT grants psychologists the authority to practice across state lines safely.
